Eye Movements in Programming Education: Analyzing the expert’s gaze

Abstract

This position paper describes the author’s experience with the ELAN tool for annotating the recorded eye movements of two expert programs during a code-reading exercise. From observable patterns in the gaze, strategies that the subjects may have been employing are inferred. Ideas for future re-earch directions and the possible applications to improving Computer Science education by explicitly teaching reading skills to novices is discussed
